A Small Town on a Very Big Map

Bunnell is a small town spread over a very large area, and epoxy flooring in Bunnell reflects that. Since 2000 the city has annexed more than 87,000 acres. It now covers close to 139 square miles, yet the 2020 census counted only 3,276 residents. That works out to about 23 people per square mile. So our work here splits two ways: garages in the older town center, and shop and equipment floors out on the land.

In town: older homes along State Street

U.S. Route 1 runs through the middle of Bunnell as State Street. The town was settled in the 1880s, incorporated as a town in 1913 and became a city in 1924. Its oldest standing building is the Lambert House from 1909, and Craftsman houses such as the 1918 Holden House still stand. Garages and slabs at older homes like these have often been painted, patched or worn smooth. We grind off old coatings, fill cracks and test for moisture before choosing a system.

For in-town garages we usually recommend:

  • Flake epoxy with a polyaspartic topcoat for everyday parking
  • Solid color with light texture for a workshop corner
  • Textured patio coatings for back porches and carports

Out of town: shops, barns and equipment floors

On larger properties, a concrete floor may carry a truck, a tractor, a boat or a full workshop. These floors take dropped tools, fuel spills, rolling jacks and mud tracked in from wet fields. Commercial and shop floor epoxy fits this work. It goes on thicker, resists impact and chemicals, and wipes clean.

  • Hot tires and heavy loads: thicker systems and a hard topcoat
  • Fuel, oil and fertilizer: chemical-resistant topcoats
  • Wet entries: extra grit at doors
  • Large spans: we plan the job in sections around your operation

Low, flat ground

Wikipedia lists Bunnell's elevation as 10 feet. Low, flat land in a wet climate keeps the ground under a slab damp for much of the year. Outbuildings without a vapor barrier are especially prone to moisture coming up through the concrete. We run a moisture test on every slab. Where readings are high, we use a moisture-tolerant primer. If water is coming in at the walls or through cracks, we tell you before you spend anything on a coating.

Patios and porches on older homes

Many older Bunnell homes have a front porch slab or a back patio poured long before anyone thought of coating it. These surfaces see full sun and rain. We use UV-stable, light-colored systems with texture on them. Cracks are filled and ground smooth first. Where a porch meets the house, we check that water drains away from the wall before we coat.

Working in the county seat

Bunnell is the seat of Flagler County, and the Old Flagler County Courthouse from 1926 still stands downtown. The town also holds small businesses, offices and service shops along the U.S. 1 corridor. We coat commercial floors as well as homes. For businesses we can plan work over a weekend or in phases so you stay open.

Getting a price

We come out, measure each building and test each slab. The written quote lists every surface separately, with the system, each coat and the prep for that floor. If you want only one building done now and another later, we price them apart.

Bunnell Questions

Can you coat a large equipment building in sections?

Yes. On big floors we can coat one area at a time so you can move equipment around the work. Each section gets the same grinding, repair and coating steps, and we plan the seams at joints.

What system holds up best in a farm or equipment shop?

A thicker 100% solids epoxy base with a chemical-resistant topcoat is a common choice. It handles fuel, oil and heavy traffic. We add grit near doors where mud and water come in.

My in-town garage floor is cracked and painted. Is it worth coating?

Most of the time, yes. Paint gets ground off and cracks are filled. If a slab is heaving or badly broken, we will tell you it needs concrete repair first.
